Batumi
Port Town on the Black Sea coast
Batumi is a green city on the Black Sea coast. In the city thriving subtropical plants: palm trees, cypruses, magnolias, oleanders, lemons, orange trees.
Their name derives from the green limen bathy, Deep Harbor. It is the youngest of the Georgian cities and an important port city in the country, a significant transshipment center for oil.
Batumi is at the same time bathing town with a 7 km long completely redesigned beach promenade. The city is very attractive to the holidaymakers and tourists. The huge hotels like Trump Tower, the Radisson Blue, and Sheraton e.g. were built.
Many interesting new buildings in the coastal city of Batumi show a modern, picturesque, but a bit provocative city panorama. Along the Batumi-Boulevard, beautiful architectonic buildings struggled. The attractions of Batumi include a sculpture of Ali and Nino. It refers to the novel by Azerbaijani author Kurban Said, which portrays the wonderful love of Georgian Nino and Azerbaijanian Ali.
The 130-meter-high Georgian alphabet tower, made of glass and metal, with 33 letters of Georgian writing language. On the upper floor there is a coffee, a restaurant, a TV studio and an observatory.
The 21 meter high historical lighthouse of the Batumi harbor, built by a Parisian company in 1878, still impresses visitors today.
The so-called Chacha Tower belongs to the curiosity of the city. There are rumors that once a week instead of the water from the fountains Chacha (Georgian grappa) bubbles.
The redesigned dolphin park, Aqua Park, beautiful boulevard and beach promenade, housed on the Ardagani Lake Dancing fountains, nightclubs and bars promise the tourists an unforgettable time.
The old Batumi has many old buildings with a mix of Orient and Occident. These houses with unique figures of lions, chimera, and mythical representations enchant every viewer. The center of the old Batumi is the Europe square with the Sculpture of Medea. This monument refers to the myth about Argonauts, about the kingdom of Colchis and the Golden Fleece. The popular place for Georgians and all holidaymakers is newly built so-called Piazza. In the Piazza, there are three luxury hotels, as well as numerous coffee and restaurants. Every evening plays live music here.
Batumi is a science center. It is home to universities, the University, the Faculty of Mary, the Batumi Center for Art and Music, the Opera House, the Archaeological Museum and many other historical and architectural works of art.
A cable car takes you to the highest elevation of the city, about 300 meters above sea level, from where you can enjoy a picturesque view of the whole city, the Black Sea and mountain chains in the hinterland.
Botanical Garden
An interesting excursion destination is Batumi Botanical Garden. Here you can relax from the summer heat very well. The garden covers 108 hectares. It is divided into nine geographical and scenic zones, where you can visit 5,000 plant species from different countries.
Gonio fortress
The Gonio fortress (1st century BC), south of Batumi, near the Turkish border, is an interesting excursion destination. The castle was formerly called Apsaros, probably the first Roman fortress in Georgia. Later occupied the place the Byzantines and Ottomans. The 900 meter long and up to 5 meter high wall with 18 of the 22 watchtowers have been preserved to this day.
The history of the fortress is also closely linked the legend of the Argonauts. Here is burial site of Apsaros, the son of the King of Colchis Aetes. According to legend he was killed in the battle against the Greeks after Jason stole the Golden Fleece.
According to tradition, the apostle Matthew is also to be buried in the fortress.
Petra’s fortress
Petra’s fortress is located in the village Tsikhisdziri, on a hill on the Black Sea. It dates back to the 6th century. The fortress Petra (Greek: stone, rock) was protected with two walls. The ruins of the oldest basilica (from the 4th century) and the pagan buildings were preserved in the territory of the castle. In the citadel are the ruins of a palace, old bath and other buildings. The fortified city had an important military-strategic and economic importance. This was the main road to the Byzantium, Georgia, Armenia and Iran.
Today, Petra's fortress is a touristic destination. Here you can spend a nice time in summer and enjoy a wonderful view over the Black Sea.
Mtirala National Park
Mtirala National Park is a nature reserve near Batumi.
The name mtirala means "crypt" and is derived from the annual precipitation of about 4520 mm. The park covers 16 000 ha and is rich with plants, animals and waterfalls. The flora consists of 284 plant species, of which 16 species are endemic. Up to 95 species of vertebrate species, which live in dense forests, are 23 species recorded in the Georgian Red Book. The bird world is also considered. That's the reason the place is known as a bird paradise.
For birdwatchers, there is an organizing Batumi Raptor Count (BRC).
The entire protected territory is developed by tourists. There are signposted hiking trails. One has good possibilities for camping. The nature reserve offers the tourists a wonderful time in greenery of nature.
Kobuleti
Kobuleti is the seaside resort on the Black Sea, about 25 km north of Batumi. Under the Ottoman rule the city was called the Turkish name Cürüsku.
At the end of the 19th century, after the end of the Russian-Turkish war, the entire Ajara was adapted to Russia. In 1944, Kobuleti received the status of a city, soon became the Elite holiday resort. Cobuleti is a climate-balneological resort because of its mild subtropical climate. Many sanatoriums and guesthouses offer the holidaymaker a good rest. Every year in summer the city is visited by about 100 000 tourists.
Also in the surroundings of Kobuleti there are various excursion destinations in the foothills of the Meskhetischen Mountains.
