    Day 1: On the old Silk Road

    Jvari Monastery, Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, Shiomghvime Monastery. Ananuri fortress
    Drive to the old capital Mtskheta at the intersection of Military and Silk Road. Visit Jvari- (Cross) Monastery (585-605). Here on this hill, Nino, who introduced Christianity in Georgia in the fourth century, erected a monumental cross, a triumphal sign of the Christianization of the country. Next visit Svetitskhoveli Cathedral (11th). The cathedral of the life-giving pillar-svetitskhoveli was for centuries the coronation and burial site of the Georgian monarchs and was regarded as the main church of the Georgian Orthodox Apostle Church. Afterwards visit Shiomghvime Monastery, means Shio’s cave. It was one of the most important monasteries in the country. From the 11th to the 14th century it was a scientific center. Afterwards drive on the old Silk Road to the Great Caucasus. On the way visit the Ananuri fortress (16-18th).

    Day 2: Mythical Mountain Kasbegi
    Gudauri, Kazbegi, Gergeti Monastery, Darial Gorge, Tbilisi
    After breakfast, hike (about 3-4 hours) to Trinity Church Tsminda Sameba (14th century, about 2.000m). If you are standing in front of Kazbek (5.047m) and looking up to this impressive mountain, you will soon notice that it is here on a mythical mountain. According to the Amirani legend, it is the mountain to which Prometheus, which is called the Georgian legend Amirani, was smashed out of revenge for having stolen the fire from the gods and brought them to the people. In the afternoon drive along the river Terek to the gloomy deep and legendary Darial Gorge to the border of the Russian Federation.
